Welcome to the website of Ingenieurbüro-Eder, a German engineering firm! The firm was founded by my father nearly 40 years ago. Since then, we have been specializing in the field of surveying services. The main focus of our operations is carrying out the requisite measurements for the building of sports facilities. The present website provides an introduction to my work as an internationally active, independent surveying engineer certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations IAAF. In the following you will find information on how surveying projects are planned and implemented, a selection of reference projects, links to my partners in the field of marking and alignment, as well as an introduction to myself and my surveying firm. Building an athletics stadium or refurbishing an existing 400-m track involves high costs for each potential client, be it council or sports club. In order to reduce the risk of faulty planning and later repairs, I act as a consultant to architects and landscape planners to help them in the correct implementation of the rules and standards set by the IAAF.

Building Surveying

Installing the kerb of the running track requires that the contractors work with a high degree of precision. The slightest error regarding the radii or the lengths of the straights could result in the allowed tolerances of the track length being exceeded. For this reason, I permanently mark the center points of the radii with threaded rods embedded in concrete. The transitions between straights and curves are temporarily marked. A reference distance is staked out, so contractors can always check their steel measuring tapes in order to avoid errors due to temperature variations. After the installation of about three quarters of the kerb, an intermediate check can be performed in order to enable a corrected value to be calculated for the remaining curved section. After completion of the work, the threaded rod is removed. The tubes remain in the ground and remain available for further surveying work.

Asphalt checking

Prior to laying down the plastic surfacing, the level of the asphalt layer is checked. In this way we can make sure that any prior work performed by a subcontractor of a third party has been completed correctly. At the same time, any present installations for any further jumping and throwing disciplines can be checked. Examples are the dimensioning of the sand pits, the correct position of the take-off boards or the diameter of the throwing circles. Any mistakes can thus be corrected even before the plastic surfacing is installed.

Disciplines/Line Markings

The line markings and the disciplines are measured on the finished plastic surface. The international standard disciplines and the competitions required for each national federation are line-marked while taking track geometry into consideration. In addition to the 400-m standard track with standard radius, staking values can be calculated for all structural variants: Curves having various different transition radii or clothoid tracks. Due to the long-term collaboration with specialized marking firms, professional and efficient execution of the work can be guaranteed.

Running track certificate

To ensure that all athletes find the same conditions for their sports all over the world, and to make results comparable world-wide, sports stadiums are certified by the international athletics federation. A precondition for this is the IAAF Measurement Report, which I am authorized to issue as a surveying firm certified by the IAAF. Should the IAAF certification not be necessary, a general running track certificate, or a measuring certificate is issued. They show the calculation of the track length and confirm the accuracy of the line markings.

Marking Plan

Many national federations publish marking plans, in addition to the IAAF, in which the standard marked disciplines are indicated. The marking plans drafted by us in 1:200 scale are always based on each current installation. They only show markings that actually exist. The sectors and ancillary installations are shown in exactly the way they were installed. All plans can be handed over as a large-format plot or in digital form, as pdf or dwg files. If desired, the legend of the plan shows the address and the logo of the client.

Marking Plates

For easier identification of the disciplines, marking plates are installed at the kerb. Anodized aluminum signs are used as a standard. UV-resistant plastic signs can also be provided. The coloring of the marking plates will always correspond to the color of the markings on the track. Since the marking plates are made by myself with the aid of a computer-controlled engraving machine, each engraving can be made in the desired language. Special requests can also be accommodated, such as larger, individualized marking plates showing the address details of the client or sponsor.

Cycle Tracks

We carry out various measuring services in collaboration with leading architects world-wide specializing in the planning and building of cycle tracks: Measurement of the actual condition as a basis for the computation of the track geometry, staking-out work for building the track carried out by a specialized carpenter and drafting of the Inspection Report as a basis for homologizing the velodrome by UCI, the world governing body for cycling. We are one of the few UCI-certified engineering firms world-wide authorized to execute surveying work as a basis for the homologizing process.

About Me
Andreas Eder

Even as a child, in my school holidays, I used to love accompanying my father in the 1970s when he was contracted to measure athletics sports facilities as a freelance surveying engineer. After he founded his own surveying engineering firm in 1980 this became my regular holiday job, taking me on trips throughout Germany and neighboring countries. After completing my degree as a surveying and measuring engineer at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany, I worked for various surveying firms, and I took the one-year course offered by the Brandenburg Ministry for the Interior to train as an administrator in the higher technical surveying administration. After my father died in 2002, I took over control of his firm and have been running it ever since as a freelance consultant surveying and measuring engineer. As an independent engineer, I can guarantee consistently high quality and reliability.
